The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori based approach to the religious education formation for young children ages 3, 4 and 5 year old. It is one of the latest programs that we now offer at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Helotes. This program is based on the Bible, the Roman Catholic liturgy, the Sacraments, the Tradition, and Church teachings.
Under the principle that there is a deep bond between God and the child, the catechists prepare the environment and make presentations that ask for the child’s response. Together they discover the answer to: God, who are you? How do you love us?
The atrium, the room prepared especially for students, provides the students scale models of things used in the church such as an altar and a baptismal font. We also share materials that proclaim our faith such as parables, prophesies, and passages of the life of Jesus. These materials aid in the child’s understanding of Scripture and Liturgy.
The atrium is a place where the child comes to know the great realities of …. Life as a Christian, but also and above all, a place where the child begins to live these realities in meditation and prayer. There is nothing of the academic classroom about the atrium; it is not a place for religious instruction but religious life. (Sofia Cavalletti, RPOC pg 56)
