Love Starts at Home…

Words from Mother Theresa

(En Español)

Mother Teresa often spoke about the need to love and be loved.  “God loved the world so much that he gave his son… (who) came to bring the good news for you and me”.  And as if that was not enough – it was not enough to become a man – Jesus died on the cross to ‘show’ that greater love…”  And he asks us to love each other.

She then puts us to the test: “How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your     neighbor whom you see…”  She shares some of her encounters with the poor:

“The poor people are very great people. They can teach us so many beautiful things…. And these are people who maybe have nothing to eat … not a home where to live, but they are great people.”

Mother recounts the day she took a dying woman in “I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand, as she said one word only: Thank you – and she died.

“I could not help but examine my conscience before her, and I asked what I would say if I was in her place… I would have said I am hungry, that I am   dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more – she gave me her grateful love.”

“As that man whom we picked up from the drain, half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. ‘I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for.’”

Mother asks us to take inventory of our lives; that regardless of our riches, we may still suffer from lack of love.  She recalls a visit to a beautiful nursing home with all the comforts, but remarks of the      residents: “They are hurt because they are forgotten … “Maybe in our own family we have somebody who is feeling lonely, who is feeling sick, who is feeling worried… Are we there, are we there to receive them, is the mother there to receive her child?”

She calls to us: “I want you to find the poor here, right in your own home first. And begin love there…let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, and once we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.

“Smile at each other, make time for each other in your family. Smile at each other”
